USCF/ICC Quick Rated Saturday Tourney

Here is another game that I played over the weekend. For those who do not know the USCF in conjunction with the ICC hold USCF Quick Rated tourneys at 5pm Server time (Eastern Time) every Saturday. Yesterday was the first one that I have played in and I thought that I played pretty well considering that everyone I played was at least 400 point higher than me. They use your USCF rating to do the pairings and not everyone has an established rating so you can be paired with someone who has a 1800 ICC but does not have even a provisional USCF rating, I believe this is what happened to me and this is why I was playing the last round with a 600 point rating gap between me and my opponent.

One of my games though I played very well with the black pieces and aside from one errant move, I calculated it and wrote the move down I just didn’t play it on the board. I got excited and just plain forgot to make the move.

The game started off pretty strange, at least to me, with 1.d4 d5 2.e3? I quickly busted out 2… e6 with the idea of getting long lasting control of the e4 square and using that as a launching point of my future attack.

Not to mention I will gain a tempo on the bishop. 0:11:27 6.Bc2 0:12:11 6...b5 0:11:06 7.Nd2 0:12:11 7...Bd6 Bb2 would have been slightly better as it would have given me one more defender/ attacker on the e4 square. 0:10:59 8.Ngf3 0:12:13 8...Ng4 This was to apply pressure to his light squared bishop and maybe picking up a pawn if he played poorly. 0:10:06 9.Qe2 0:12:08 9...f6 I was trying to not allow his bishop in e5 Stockfish says f5 would have kept the game more or less even but f6 gives white a pawn advantage. We are not grandmasters so I think it was negligible but is good information for the next time I’m in a similar spot. 0:09:41 10.e4 0:11:09 10...Bxf4 0:09:13 11.Ne5 the following line from Stockfish is interesting and I had not even considered it for a second. Taking with fxe5 allowed me to get Qa4+and I get to pick up another pawn and his light squared bishop is pretty much out of the game for the next few moves. My plan here was to trade as much as possible and win the end game a pawn or two up. 0:10:50 11...Nxe5 0:08:51

I was really happy with this game except my last move, I thought I played solid chess not great but much better and I thought that I had a good plan of action with every move, something that I have had a problem with. However it did keep me up last night going over it in my head, then i watched the US Chess Championships today and the the Holt v Troff game and i felt way better about my blunder. What a game that one was, If you haven't seen it please look it up and/or check out the St Louis Scholastic Center and Chess Club YouTube video, but that game was amazing to watch.

Areas of improvement are to get all of my pieces in the game sooner, my light squared bishop queen-side night and rook were inactive until move 20, gotta get them working sooner than that. J
