| This is my new Chess set my wife bought for me, I love it!!! |
I had to take some time off from chess and writing, I changed
jobs and that took most of my free time and desire to do much of anything other
than look for work. Now that I am re-employed I must continue getting better at
chess.
We had a few tournaments here in the Florida Panhandle that
last few weeks. I played in the event sponsored by the Destin chess club and
then yesterday I played in the event sponsored by the Pensacola Club.
The event in Destin had a very low turnout, as it was an
event we played out doors on a day when it was supposed to rain all day. Those
of us who showed up (6) had a good time and we played a five round round robin
instead of the four round Swiss. I was happy to get an extra round in as my
rating is still provisional.
The event in Pensacola was much larger; we had 18 players
turn out with several players rated above 2100 and three more in the 1700-1900
rating. We had several players show up from NOLA, it was nice to see players
making the trip. Hopefully our next tournament in Pensacola will break the 20s,
dare I wish for 24 or 26 players.
I ended up getting 8 games in for the two weeks (I left
early from Pensacola), however I went 0-8. The rust in my game has never been
more apparent. I have not had much time to analyze all of the games but here is
my first round game from the Pensacola tournament.
In this game I am playing a player who is rated just over
600 rating points higher than me, I was hoping to get into an even position and
transfer to the end game with hopes of at least a draw. However, once I hung a
pawn on move 6 the game went from bad to worse.
As always my analysis is done prior to using the computer
and please leave a comment if you have something constructive to add. Enjoy.

I always have an issue with this move, I want e4 in order to have another attacker on d5 but i need to tade fast or I lose the power the bishop on g2 has.

I completly missed it, not sure what I was thinking but as soon as i took my hand off of my knight I realized my mistake. 6. d4 would have been much better then I could have brought the knight to e2 to protect the other knight and keep the attack on d5. 7.d3

I don't like this move, I feel I should have went with Nd5, I would have slightly better than I was previously ofer Nxd5 fxd5 Bc8. The doubled pawns will be a weakness I will have to take care of though and I will have to do something the the Bishop on g2.

I didn't see this in my calculations, looking at it now it seems obvious he has to stop the advance of the d pawn to save his dominating light squared bishop. 20.e5

At this point I was lost on how to defend and to make a plan of attack. I cant see how to get to his bishop or queen and the battery is about to take me out. Although i did like some of the defesive moves I came up with, althought they did just prolong the defeat. 23.Rxf8
